Self-Control: The Lifeblood of Virtue

"Self-control...is the exercise of godly restraint upon our human appetites and passions. This quality is practically the lifeblood of virtue itself—so that a person of true character is most easily distinguished by his or her extraordinary self-control. In the development of Christlike character qualities, here is a trait to which we ought to give a significant amount of energy and attention."

- John MacArthur, The Quest for Character, ch. 25, p. 104–105

  1. I'm often reminded of the verse in Proverbs stating that "like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control." (25:28) A city without walls (in those days) was completely defenseless and susceptible to attack and overthrow. As a man, I MUST keep my walls in good repair.

  8. Hi, Brad,

Indeed, until we are glorified we will always have occasion to grow in a new aspect of discipline, all for the beauty of Christlikeness produced in us.

    Blessings to you.
